The law on ecological fuel in the field of shipping was adopted in the European Union
The final rules for climate-neutral shipping have been approved in the European Union after two years of lively discussion. As a result, the FuelEU maritime initiative was adopted, part of which is a legislative act on ecological fuel in maritime transport.
The Emissions Trading System (ETS) will start operating in the EU in 2024, and FuelEU Maritime will come into operation in 2025. The new regulations will force shipping companies to gradually reduce their negative impact on the environment. Effective tools here can be the use of alternative fuels, as well as the connection of ships to “shore energy sources” during their stay in major ports.
-The new law will provide legal certainty for ship operators and fuel producers and help start large-scale production of environmentally friendly marine fuel. Thus, it is possible to achieve the climate goals set by the EU,” explained the Spanish Minister of Transport, Raquel Sanchez
Jimenez.
The authors of the laws are trying to promote demand for alternative types of renewable fuels with low carbon content. Thus, at the beginning of the regulations, in 2025, they want to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in shipping by 2%, but by 2050 the reduction should be at least 80%. And from 2030, all passenger ships and container ships will have to use a shore-based power source for all electricity needs when berthing in major EU ports.
