Spain agreed to finance the construction of a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar

Just as the Channel Tunnel connected Britain to continental Europe, the Gibraltar Tunnel will connect Europe and Africa.

The Spanish government has so far announced the allocation of a small amount – 2.3 million euros. However, it is precisely this money that is needed in order to conduct appropriate research and start creating project documentation. Establishing a sustainable railway connection between Europe and Africa is foreseen.

The width of the Strait of Gibraltar is only 14 km at its narrowest point. And the depth varies between 300 and 900 meters.

Studies on intercontinental fixed transport connections between Europe and Africa have been carried out at intervals for more than 40 years, coordinated by the public organizations Secegsa in Spain and SNED in Morocco. However, the joint Moroccan-Spanish committee has not met since 2009.

  • After 14 years since the meeting in Tangier in October 2009, we are going to give impetus to the research of a project that has great geostrategic importance for our countries and for relations between Europe and Africa, – said the Minister of Transport of Spain, Raquel Sanchez Jimenez.
